Teleworking: staying active when working from home

IRIS Prévention
14 October 2026
Teleworking eliminates commuting and office travel. So many opportunities to move that must be recreated voluntarily.

Teleworking offers flexibility, but it sometimes has an unexpected effect: it further reduces the time spent standing and moving. No more commuting, going back and forth to the office, or taking a lunch break outside. Without paying attention, you can spend an entire day almost motionless. Here's how to stay active while working from home.

1. A discreet trap for a sedentary lifestyle

At home, the natural opportunities to move disappear: no more travel, less travel, everything is within reach. The workstation is often close to the sofa or bed. Result: sitting time increases without us realizing it.

2. Recreate opportunities to move

Voluntarily recreating movements compensates for the loss of “automatic” movements of the office.

3. Arrange your workstation

A well-organized workstation helps preserve the body: screen at the right height, suitable seat, sufficient lighting. Alternating postures, or even working standing up at times, limits immobility. Avoiding working slumped on the sofa protects your back.

4. Structure your day

    • Establish a “false journey” on foot morning and evening
    • Schedule regular active breaks
    • Go out during lunch break
    • Set schedules to avoid endless days

Well-organized teleworking can even become an opportunity to move more, freeing up travel time for physical activity.

💡 tips to remember

    • When teleworking, the natural opportunities to move disappear (no more commuting or traveling): sitting time increases without us noticing.
    • I deliberately recreate trips: “false journey” on foot, calls while walking, going out during the lunch break.
    • I arrange my workstation: screen at the right height, seat adapted, and I avoid working slumped on the sofa to protect my back.
    • I alternate postures and schedule regular active breaks during the day.
    • Well organized, teleworking can become an opportunity to move more by freeing up travel time.
