The health check: why and how often to do it

A health check-up is not only used to treat: it is mainly used to anticipate. Taking stock regularly, even when in good health, is one of the most effective prevention actions.

We often consult our doctor when something is wrong. However, sometimes the most useful medicine is the one that works before symptoms appear. The health check-up is part of this logic: taking a complete look at your condition, detecting possible imbalances early and adapting your lifestyle before problems set in. You still need to know what it covers and how often to carry it out.

1. What is a health check really for?

The health check-up is a preventive examination which aims to assess the overall state of health of a person, at a given moment, regardless of any complaints. Its main objective is screening: to identify silent abnormalities (hypertension, excess cholesterol, prediabetes, etc.) before they cause complications.

It also allows you to take stock of your lifestyle habits (diet, physical activity, sleep, consumption) and to benefit from personalized advice. Finally, it is a good time to update your vaccinations and check that the recommended age-specific screenings have been carried out.

2. What a balance sheet generally contains

The content of an assessment varies depending on age, gender and background. It most often includes an interview on personal and family history, a measurement of weight, height and waist circumference, a blood pressure measurement, and depending on the context, a blood test.

ReviewWhat it evaluatesFrom when
Blood pressureCardiovascular risk, hypertensionFrom adulthood, at each consultation
Review bloodBlood sugar, cholesterol, kidney functionDepending on risk factors, often from the age of 40
Weight / waist circumferenceOverweight, abdominal obesityTo all age
Targeted screeningsCancers (breast, colon, cervix)Depending on the programs organized

3. How often to do it?

There is no universal rule: frequency depends on age and risk factors. In the absence of any particular problem, one point every two to three years may be sufficient in a young adult, while annual follow-up becomes relevant with age or in the presence of risk factors (family history, overweight, smoking, hypertension).

In France, Health Insurance offers a free preventive examination at certain stages of life. Some companies also offer occupational health assessments. The main thing is not to wait until you are sick to consult.

4. Prepare your appointment well

To get the most out of a check-up, it is useful to gather your medical documents in advance (test results, reports, vaccination record) and write down your questions. Reporting your family history is particularly important, because it guides the proposed screenings.

An assessment is not an end in itself: its real value lies in the actions it triggers, whether it involves adapting one's lifestyle or implementing closer monitoring.

💡 tips to remember

    • The health check is primarily used to detect silent anomalies before they cause complications: it is useful even when you feel in great shape.
    • Its frequency depends on age and risk factors: one point every 2 to 3 years in young adults, rather annually with age or in the presence of risk factors.
    • Health Insurance offers a free preventive examination at certain stages of life: it's an opportunity not to be missed.
    • I prepare for my appointment by gathering my old results and my vaccination record, and noting down my history family.
    • The real value of an assessment lies in the actions it triggers: adapting my lifestyle or setting up closer monitoring.
