Physical activity and emotion management: effort as an emotional regulator

My emotions are not only processed in my head, they live in my body. And this is precisely why moving is one of the most effective interventions to welcome them, overcome them and transform them.

I am angry, frustrated, or overwhelmed by anxiety. The usual response: rethink the situation, put things into perspective, talk to someone. These strategies are useful, but they have a limit: they act on the cognitive content of emotions without always deactivating their biological substrate. The cortisol is still there, the adrenaline is still running, the muscles are tense.

Emotions are embodied neurobiological events, involving measurable hormonal, nervous and physical changes. This is why physical activity, which acts precisely on these biological substrates, is one of the most effective and immediate emotional regulators available. Here's the science behind this intuition, and how to get the most out of it.

1. Emotions in the body: the neurobiological basis

Neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett has helped revolutionize our understanding of emotions by showing that they are not simple mental states but neurobiological constructs involving the whole body. The body is not the simple performer of emotions, it is their terrain.

  • The amygdala and the threat response: the amygdala detects emotional stimuli (fear, anger, social threat) and triggers a hormonal cascade, cortisol, adrenaline, which prepares the body for action. This activation persists until the body makes the response for which it was prepared.
  • The prefrontal cortex and regulation: the prefrontal cortex (executive function area) modulates the activity of the amygdala, it inhibits or contextualizes it. This regulation is weakened by chronic stress, lack of sleep and a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Muscle memory of emotions: unexpressed or unresolved emotions are often accompanied by chronic muscular tension, clenched jaw, contracted shoulders, hard stomach. These tensions perpetuate the emotional state in return.
  • The gut-brain axis: the enteral nervous system (the second intestinal brain) is intimately connected to emotions. Stress and intense emotions disrupt intestinal motility, and physical activity acts directly on this system.

Beyond the immediate effects, regular physical activity has a lasting impact on the way I process and respond to emotional stimuli:

  • Strengthening the prefrontal cortex: regular aerobic exercise increases the thickness of the prefrontal cortex, the region that modulates the amygdala and allows emotional regulation. The stronger this cortex is, the more I can accommodate intense emotions without being overwhelmed.
  • Reduction in amygdala reactivity: neuroimaging research (Hartley & Phelps, 2010) shows that 8 weeks of regular exercise significantly reduces the reactivity of the amygdala to negative stimuli, reducing the intensity of automatic emotional responses.
  • Increase in the discomfort tolerance threshold: physical effort teaches you to tolerate discomfort, muscle burning, shortness of breath, fatigue. This tolerance transfers to emotional discomfort, strengthening the ability to remain stable in the face of difficult emotions.
  • Hippocampal neurogenesis and emotional regulation: the hippocampus plays a key role in the contextualization of emotions. Aerobic exercise stimulates its growth, improving the ability to distinguish real threats from false emotional alarms.

4. Use exercise as a daily emotional toolIntegrating physical activity as a deliberate emotional regulation strategy requires conscious practice:

  • Active break in stressful situations: before a difficult conversation, an important decision or a stressful meeting, 10 to 15 minutes of brisk walking reduce cortisol and improve the functioning of the prefrontal cortex, allowing better regulation.
  • Intense exercise as a release: when anger or frustration is high, intense effort (running, boxing, HIIT) is one of the most effective ways to metabolize the biological substrate. It's not emotional suppression, it's bodily metabolism.
  • Gentle movement as an anchor: in cases of anxiety or sadness, insisting with intense effort can aggravate the condition. A gentle, rhythmic and pleasant movement (walking, yoga) activates the parasympathetic and creates a space of presence in the body.
  • Sensory anchoring through movement: focusing on physical sensations during exercise (breath, ground support, muscle heat) is a form of embodied mindfulness that interrupts cognitive emotional spirals.

5. When emotions block exercise

Paradoxically, the emotional states that would benefit most from exercise—depression, severe anxiety, exhaustion—are also the ones that make it hardest to start. Some strategies to get around this blockage:

  • The 5 minute rule: allow yourself to stop after 5 minutes. The commitment is minimal, and in the vast majority of cases, once started, the movement takes over emotional resistance.
  • Choose the activity according to your emotional state: do not impose an effort on yourself whose format does not correspond to my state. If I'm exhausted and depressed, a 15-minute walk is infinitely more accessible, and just as beneficial, than a HIIT session.
  • Movement as care, not performance: reframing exercise as an act of kindness towards oneself rather than as an obligation to perform considerably reduces emotional resistance.
