Thinness and low BMI: when the weight is too low

IRIS Prévention
25 November 2026
Health is not just about being overweight: being too low also deserves attention and kindness.

We talk a lot about being overweight, more rarely about being thin. However, a BMI that is too low can also have health consequences and signal an underlying problem. Recognizing thinness, understanding the possible causes and knowing when to consult is part of a comprehensive approach to health.

1. What do we call thinness?

In adults, a BMI below 18.5 is considered a sign of thinness, to be interpreted depending on the context. Some people are naturally thin and healthy; others are underweight and deserve attention, especially in cases of recent, unintentional weight loss.

2. Possible consequences

Too low weight can be accompanied by deficiencies, fatigue, reduced immunity, hormonal disorders or bone fragility. In the elderly, malnutrition increases the risk of complications and loss of autonomy.

HormonesCycle Disorders
EnergyFatigue, weakness

3. Various causes

Thinness can be constitutional, but also linked to insufficient nutrition, an illness, an eating disorder, significant stress or certain treatments. Unexplained weight loss should always lead to consultation.

4. When and how to act

If the weight is stable, low but without other signs, there is no necessarily cause for concern. On the other hand, unintentional weight loss, marked fatigue or other symptoms warrant medical advice to find the cause and offer appropriate support.

The care, often multidisciplinary, aims to regain a satisfactory nutritional state, with kindness and without judgment.

If you are concerned about your weight or your diet, a healthcare professional can help you. In case of difficulties related to eating behavior, specialized support is available.
