The DTP reminder: don’t forget your adult reminders

IRIS Prévention
9 September 2026
The diphtheria-tetanus-poliomyelitis booster is one of the most forgotten adult vaccines, even though it protects against formidable diseases.

We think vaccinations are reserved for childhood. However, protection against diphtheria, tetanus and polio wanes over time and requires boosters in adulthood. These diseases, which have become rare, remain serious. The DTP reminder, often forgotten, is a simple preventive action that should not be neglected.

1. Three serious illnesses

Diphtheria, tetanus and poliomyelitis are potentially serious diseases. Tetanus, in particular, is not transmitted from one person to another: it can be contracted from a simple soiled wound, which makes vaccination protection all the more important at any age.

2. Why reminders in adulthood

The protection acquired in childhood diminishes with the years. Without reminders, we become vulnerable again. This is why the calendar provides for regular reminders in adulthood, at milestone ages.

Age benchmarkDTP reminder
25 yearsRecall recommended
45 yearsRecall recommended
65 yearsRecommended reminder
ThenEvery 10 years

These benchmarks may change: the current vaccination schedule is the reference. The doctor or pharmacist specifies what applies.

3. The special case of wounds

In the event of a wound, particularly a soiled one, the question of tetanus arises. If recalls are not up to date, specific support may be required. Being up to date with your vaccinations avoids this problem and protects effectively.

4. Get up to date

Checking your notebook lets you know if a recall is due. In case of doubt or a lost notebook, the doctor offers to make up for it. The DTP vaccine can be combined with other valences (such as pertussis) according to recommendations.

    • Check the date of your last reminder
    • Update yourself according to the calendar
    • Consider tetanus in the event of a soiled wound

An up-to-date DTP reminder is simple protection against serious illnesses. The doctor or pharmacist can check.
